Tsurara Kannon Temple

A Mysterious Kannon Sanctuary Beside a Limestone Cave

Tsurara Kannon is a small Buddhist sanctuary in Naka Town, Naka District, Tokushima Prefecture, set beside a limestone cave filled with striking natural formations. Its principal image is the Eleven-Headed Kannon, a bodhisattva of compassion who is revered by worshippers. The sanctuary takes its name from the cave’s many stalactites, which hang from the ceiling like long icicles. This unusual combination of sacred space and natural wonder gives Tsurara Kannon a distinctive atmosphere.

A Hidden Sanctuary Along a Mountain Road

The sanctuary is located along Tokushima Prefectural Route 19. At the entrance, a stone-pillared gate marks the beginning of a narrow approach path. Passing through the gate, visitors encounter small shrines dedicated to Jizo, the Buddhist guardian of travelers and children, and Hotei, one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods.

Farther along the path stands a hall dedicated to Kobo Daishi, the Buddhist monk also known as Kukai. Beyond it is a small red-painted hall. The main hall of Tsurara Kannon stands beside the limestone cave, allowing visitors to view the unusual formations while paying their respects to the enshrined deity.

The Limestone Cave and Its Icicle-Like Stalactites

The cave beside the main hall measures approximately 3 meters wide and 9 meters deep. Countless stalactites hang from its ceiling, creating a remarkable scene reminiscent of icicles suspended in winter. These formations inspired the name Tsurara Kannon, which literally evokes the image of an icicle-shaped Kannon sanctuary.

Entry into the cave is prohibited, so visitors must admire the formations from the main hall area. Even from outside, the natural shapes and shadowy interior create a mysterious setting where the forces of nature and Buddhist devotion meet.

A Stop on Local Pilgrimage Routes

Tsurara Kannon is included in the Awa Chichibu Kannon Pilgrimage, a regional pilgrimage dedicated to Kannon, as well as the Washiki Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage route. It is therefore a meaningful stop for visitors exploring the area’s Buddhist heritage and traditional devotional practices.

The sanctuary is maintained by Shichiin, a Buddhist temple in Naka Town. Its combination of religious significance and unusual geological features makes it an appealing destination for pilgrims and travelers interested in lesser-known sacred places in Tokushima.

Highlights of the Temple Grounds

Stone-Pillared Entrance Gate

The stone-pillared gate marks the entrance to the sanctuary’s narrow approach. Passing through it provides a quiet transition from the surrounding road into the sacred grounds.

Jizo and Hotei Shrines

Small shrines dedicated to Jizo and Hotei stand beside the approach path. Jizo is widely worshipped for protection and compassion, while Hotei is associated with happiness, prosperity, and good fortune. These shrines add to the spiritual character of the visit.

Daishido Hall

The Daishido, or Kobo Daishi Hall, is one of the buildings associated with the Awa Chichibu Kannon Pilgrimage. Inside are three Buddhist shrines containing images of Kobo Daishi, Dainichi Nyorai, and Fudo Myoo. Pilgrims pause here to offer prayers before continuing toward the main sanctuary.

Main Hall

The main hall stands directly beside the limestone cave. Three small altar enclosures inside house the sacred image of Tsurara Kannon. From this area, visitors can pay their respects and view the cave’s icicle-like stalactites without entering the restricted interior.

Access and Visitor Information

Tsurara Kannon is approximately a 60-minute drive from JR Tokushima Station. There is no dedicated parking area at the sanctuary. Visitors arriving by car are advised to park at Michi-no-Eki Washi-no-Sato, a roadside station, and walk for approximately 10 minutes to reach the site.

The approach is narrow, so visitors should take care while walking and be considerate of other worshippers. With its unusual limestone cave, traditional Buddhist halls, and peaceful mountain setting, Tsurara Kannon offers a memorable opportunity to discover a quieter and less familiar side of Tokushima’s spiritual heritage.
