The History of Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine
The shrine is traditionally believed to have been founded in 1351. Originally known simply as Hachimangū, it is mentioned in the historical gazetteer *Awa-shi*, which records that a Hachiman shrine was established in Hiwasaura in 1351. With a history spanning centuries, Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine has remained an important place of worship for local residents, preserving religious traditions across generations.
Deities Enshrined at Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine
The principal deity is Homutawake-no-Mikoto, commonly identified with Emperor Ōjin. The shrine also enshrines his mother, Okinagatarashihime-no-Mikoto, and Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto, who is traditionally regarded as the mother of Emperor Jimmu, Japan’s legendary first emperor.
Worshippers visit the shrine to pray for safe childbirth, traffic safety, family well-being, good health, and success in their studies. Its longstanding role in local religious life makes it a meaningful place to experience Japanese Shinto traditions.
Highlights Around Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine
Ohama Beach and Its Sea Turtle Nesting Grounds
Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine is located near the scenic Ohama Beach, a beautiful stretch of coastline in Minami Town. Selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Beaches, Ohama Beach is especially famous as a nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles. In 1967, the beach was designated a National Natural Monument under the name “Sea Turtles and Their Nesting Ground at Ohama Beach.”
To protect the turtles and their nesting habitat, access restrictions are imposed annually from May 20 to August 20 under applicable conservation laws and local regulations. Visitors should check current restrictions before approaching the beach during this period.
Sea Turtle Conservation and Nesting Records
Records of loggerhead sea turtles coming ashore at Ohama Beach have been kept since 1950. The highest recorded number was 308 landings in 1968. Numbers subsequently declined, falling to double digits after 1996 and eventually to single digits. In 2018, no nesting was recorded for the first time since records began, and in 2023, no turtles came ashore.
On June 12, 2024, a sea turtle came ashore and laid eggs at the beach for the first time in two years. This encouraging development brought renewed hope to local residents and conservation groups working to protect the nesting environment.
The Natural Scenery of Ohama Beach
Ohama Beach stretches for approximately 500 meters along the coast of Hiwasaura. Its name means “large beach,” distinguishing it from Kohama, a smaller beach near the mouth of the Hiwasa River. Just offshore lies Tatejima, a small island that, according to local accounts, could once be reached on foot at low tide.
The combination of white sand, ocean views, and wildlife conservation makes the beach a memorable place to appreciate the natural beauty of southern Tokushima.
