Hiwasa Castle

A White Castle Tower Overlooking the Sea

Hiwasa Castle, also known as Izutsu Castle, is a historic castle site in Minami, Kaifu District, Tokushima Prefecture. Although few historical records survive and many details about the original castle remain unknown, its striking white castle tower and lush natural surroundings make it an appealing landmark for visitors exploring the southern coast of Tokushima.

History of Hiwasa Castle

According to local tradition, Hiwasa Castle was built during the Muromachi period by Hiwasa Hizen-no-kami, a local samurai lord. However, surviving historical documents provide little information about its original layout, size, or defensive structures.

On November 17, 1577, when the Chosokabe clan invaded the Kaifu area, the Hiwasa clan, then ruling the castle, surrendered after receiving a written oath from Chosokabe Chikayasu. The family subsequently moved to Tosa Province, in what is now Kochi Prefecture. Later, Hiwasa was invited back to Awa Province by Hachisuka Iemasa and received a stipend of 50 koku as a samurai retainer.

The Castle Ruins Today

A reconstructed-style castle tower now stands on the hill believed to have been the original castle site. The building was formerly used as part of a local outdoor activity facility, but it is not a historically accurate reconstruction of the original castle. The stone walls are also modern, and almost none of the original castle remains can be seen today.

Current Access Restrictions

The castle tower is currently closed because of earthquake-safety concerns, and entry into the castle grounds is prohibited. Visitors can still view the white tower from around the parking area at Shiroyama Park. The surrounding area offers opportunities to enjoy the scenery, but there are no historical exhibits available at the site. Check with the local authorities for the latest information before visiting.

Seasonal Scenery at Shiroyama Park

The hill around Hiwasa Castle is known as a cherry blossom viewing spot. From late March to early April, the slopes are decorated with spring blossoms, attracting visitors who come to enjoy the seasonal scenery. Even when the castle itself is closed, the surrounding natural landscape can make a worthwhile stop on a sightseeing trip through Minami.
