Kamoda Cape Onsen

A Scenic Hot Spring at Shikoku’s Easternmost Point

Kamoda Cape Onsen is a relaxing hot spring destination in Tsubaki-cho, Anan City, Tokushima Prefecture, where visitors can soak in soothing mineral waters while enjoying spectacular views of the sea and sky. Located near Kamoda Cape, the easternmost point of Shikoku, the hot spring offers a memorable combination of coastal scenery, peaceful surroundings, and traditional Japanese bathing.

Originally opened as Funase Onsen, the facility began development in 1999 and welcomed its first visitors in 2001. It was renamed Kamoda Cape Onsen on November 1, 2011, as part of efforts to promote tourism and encourage greater interaction within the local community.

Hot Spring Water and Its Characteristics

Kamoda Cape Onsen is classified as a hypotonic, mildly alkaline simple hot spring. The source water temperature is 41.4°C, with a reported flow rate of 90 liters per minute. It is known as the hottest natural hot spring source in Tokushima Prefecture.

The water feels gentle on the skin, leaving bathers with a smooth, refreshed sensation. Traditional descriptions of its therapeutic benefits include relief from neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, and sensitivity to cold. These are general bathing indications rather than guarantees of medical benefit.

Panoramic Views Across the Kii Channel

Set on elevated ground, the hot spring facility features outdoor baths overlooking the Kii Channel. On clear days, visitors may be able to see as far as Awaji Island and the coast of Wakayama Prefecture. The combination of warm water, open skies, and expansive ocean views creates an especially relaxing bathing experience.

After a soak, visitors can unwind while enjoying the fresh coastal atmosphere. The peaceful setting makes Kamoda Cape Onsen an appealing place to rest after exploring the easternmost reaches of Shikoku.

A Secluded Coastal Retreat

The hot spring facility is located approximately two kilometers west of Kamoda Cape. Reaching it requires a drive of around 30 minutes from National Route 55, followed by several kilometers of narrow roads. Its somewhat remote location gives it the atmosphere of a hidden retreat surrounded by nature.

The main facility is Anan City-operated Kamoda Cape Onsen Hoyo Center, which offers day-use bathing. A restaurant is also available, serving seafood from the local area. Visitors can therefore combine a relaxing bath with a taste of the region’s coastal cuisine.

Bathing Facilities

Two Main Bath Areas

The facility has two principal bathing areas, Umigame-no-Yu and Sazanami-no-Yu. Their use alternates between men and women according to the date of the month. From the 1st through the 15th, Umigame-no-Yu is the men’s bath and Sazanami-no-Yu is the women’s bath. From the 16th until the end of the month, the arrangement is reversed.

Umigame-no-Yu

Umigame-no-Yu, meaning “Sea Turtle Bath,” has an outdoor bath with a distinctive shape inspired by the loggerhead sea turtles that come ashore on the beaches around Kamoda Cape. The bathing area also includes a large indoor bath, a waterfall-style massage bath, a sauna, and a cold-water bath.

The sea turtle theme reflects the natural character of the surrounding coastline and adds a local touch to the bathing experience.

Sazanami-no-Yu

Sazanami-no-Yu, or “Gentle Waves Bath,” takes its inspiration from the tranquil waters of Tachibana Bay, sometimes called “Awa’s Matsushima” for its scenic coastal landscape. Its design evokes the calm rhythm of waves, creating an atmosphere suited to rest and relaxation.

Facilities include a large indoor bath, an outdoor bath, a waterfall-style massage bath, a sauna, and a cold-water bath. Together, these features offer several ways to enjoy the hot spring at a comfortable pace.

Private Family Bath: Fureai-no-Yu

Fureai-no-Yu is a private bath designed with accessibility in mind. Visitors can enter the bathing area while remaining in a wheelchair, making it a useful option for guests with mobility needs. It can also be reserved for private family bathing.

The fee is ¥2,000 for one hour for up to five people, and advance reservations are required. An adjoining small Japanese-style room, measuring eight tatami mats, can also be used for a more comfortable private visit.

History and Community Role

From Funase Onsen to Kamoda Cape Onsen

Drilling for the hot spring began in 1999, and the facility opened on July 26, 2001, under the name Funase Onsen. On November 1, 2011, it adopted the name Kamoda Cape Onsen and was renewed as part of a broader effort to encourage regional development.

The project was undertaken by Anan City with the aims of supporting public health, providing a place for relaxation, and creating opportunities for community interaction. Today, the hot spring remains a destination where visitors can appreciate the area’s natural environment while taking a break from travel.

Facilities and Visitor Services

Relaxation Areas and Amenities

The center offers more than bathing facilities. In the lobby, visitors can relax on sofas while looking out toward the Kii Channel. The changing rooms are equipped with luggage baskets, washbasins, a cold-water dispenser, hair dryers, and a baby bed.

A large multipurpose training room provides additional space to rest after bathing. Massage chairs and foot massagers are also available, helping visitors unwind before continuing their journey.

Additional Services

Guests can browse the Tokushima Shimbun newspaper and various magazines during their visit. A shop sells local products, making it possible to pick up souvenirs from the region. Free Tokushima Free Wi-Fi is available inside the facility, with access provided after registering an email address.

The center also has a commemorative stamp for visitors marking their trip to Shikoku’s easternmost point. It is a small but enjoyable way to remember a visit to this distinctive coastal destination.

Access to Kamoda Cape Onsen

There is no direct public transportation service to the hot spring, so traveling by car is necessary. From National Route 55, allow approximately 30 minutes to reach the facility. The road becomes narrow for several kilometers along the way, so drivers should proceed carefully, especially when meeting oncoming traffic.

Although the journey takes visitors away from the main roads, the secluded setting is part of the attraction. The reward is a peaceful hot spring with wide-open coastal views at the eastern edge of Shikoku.

A Restful Stop on a Southern Tokushima Journey

Kamoda Cape Onsen is a distinctive destination for travelers seeking both scenic beauty and relaxation. Its mildly alkaline hot spring water, outdoor baths overlooking the Kii Channel, accessible private bathing option, and restaurant serving local seafood make it an appealing place to spend a few restful hours.

Combine a visit with an excursion to Kamoda Cape to experience the dramatic coastline around Shikoku’s easternmost point. The winding approach, tranquil surroundings, and sweeping sea views make this hot spring a rewarding stop for those exploring the less-traveled corners of southern Tokushima.
