Minami-Awa Sunline

A Spectacular Coastal Drive Overlooking the Pacific Ocean

Minami-Awa Sunline is the popular name for Tokushima Prefectural Route 147, also known as the Hiwasa-Mugi Line. This scenic public road connects Minami Town and Mugi Town in Kaifu District, Tokushima Prefecture. Famous for its sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, it is a popular destination for road trips and attracts visitors and driving enthusiasts throughout the year.

Overview and History

Part of the Minami-Awa Sunline opened in 1970, and the entire route was completed in 1974. It originally operated as a toll road but became free to use in 1988. Today, it forms part of Tokushima Prefectural Route 147 and is best known for its coastal scenery and the annual Minami-Awa Sunline Kuroshio Marathon, held in autumn.

The route begins near JR Hiwasa Station on the JR Shikoku Mugi Line, close to Roadside Station Hiwasa. From there, it is approximately 3 kilometers to the entrance of the scenic road on the Minami Town side. The route ends at the National Route 55 intersection near JR Mugi Station in Mugi Town. The main scenic section is approximately 17 kilometers long, with four parking areas featuring observation points along the way.

Please note that motorcycles with engine capacities exceeding 125 cc are prohibited from using the road between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. the following morning.

Scenic Views and Observation Points

Several scenic spots are located along the Minami-Awa Sunline, including Senba Kaigai Observatory and Hiwasaura Observatory. These viewpoints offer panoramic views of the coastline within Muroto-Anan Quasi-National Park, as well as the vast Pacific Ocean. Parking areas make it convenient to stop, take photographs, and enjoy the scenery.

Senba Kaigai Cliffs

One of the route’s most impressive natural landmarks is Senba Kaigai, where towering cliffs rise more than 200 meters above sea level and extend for approximately 2 kilometers along the Pacific coast. The dramatic rock faces create a magnificent landscape that can be admired from designated viewpoints along the road.

The drive between Minami Town and Mugi Town is especially rewarding for travelers who enjoy coastal scenery. The changing colors of the sea, the rugged cliffs, and the surrounding vegetation offer different views throughout the seasons.

A Destination for Stargazing

Southern Tokushima is also known as a good location for stargazing because of its relatively low light pollution and clear air. In November 1998, during the spectacular Leonid meteor storm, the observation points along the Minami-Awa Sunline attracted astronomy enthusiasts from across the Kansai and Shikoku regions. Visitors gathered by car to watch the meteor display against the dark night sky.

Road Facilities and Tunnels

The Minami-Awa Sunline has tunnels and parking areas that make the scenic route accessible to drivers exploring the coast. One of its principal tunnels is Senba Tunnel, completed in 1970 and extending for 340 meters.
