Konose Gorge

A Dramatic V-Shaped Valley in Tokushima

Discover towering limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and spectacular autumn foliage in one of Tokushima Prefecture’s most impressive natural landscapes.

Konose Gorge (高の瀬峡) is a scenic gorge in Naka Town, Naka District, Tokushima Prefecture, nestled in the headwaters of the Naka River near the southern foothills of Mount Jirogyu. Surrounded by rugged mountains and rich forests, the gorge is known for its steep V-shaped valley, enormous limestone rock formations, and clear flowing streams.

Especially famous for its autumn colors, Konose Gorge has been recognized among Japan’s celebrated autumn foliage destinations. It is also included in the Tokushima 88 Scenic Views and the Tokushima Waterways 50 selections, making it an appealing destination for travelers seeking spectacular mountain scenery away from the main tourist routes.

A Magnificent Gorge Ranked Among Tokushima’s Top Attractions

The dramatic natural beauty of Konose Gorge once earned it first place in the Tokushima Prefecture Tourism Top 100 selection. Its steep-sided valley rivals the celebrated Oboke and Koboke gorges, with towering rocks, a clear mountain stream, and colorful deciduous forests creating a striking contrast.

The gorge lies within the designated area of Tsurugi Quasi-National Park, where the surrounding natural environment receives protection. As its reputation grew, facilities were developed to welcome visitors, including the Hirano Sato rest house, which provides a place to take a break during a sightseeing trip.

Autumn Foliage and Seasonal Scenery

Autumn is the most celebrated season at Konose Gorge. As the surrounding deciduous trees turn shades of red, orange, and gold, their vivid colors contrast beautifully with the pale limestone cliffs and clear water below. The combination creates a memorable mountain panorama that attracts visitors from across the region.

The foliage season is generally a popular time to visit, particularly from late October into November. During the peak period, the gorge can become busy, so arriving early in the day or visiting on a weekday may provide a more relaxed experience. The landscape also changes throughout the year, offering fresh greenery in spring and summer and a quieter atmosphere outside the autumn season.

Impressive Limestone Cliffs and Clear Mountain Streams

One of the gorge’s defining features is its enormous limestone boulders and rock faces, shaped by natural processes over long periods. Rising above the stream, these rugged formations resemble sculptures carved by nature itself.

The clear water winds through the valley, reflecting the surrounding rocks and forests. Together, the steep terrain, dramatic geological formations, and seasonal vegetation create a distinctive landscape for photography and nature appreciation.

Walking and Visitor Facilities

Visitors can explore the surrounding natural scenery on foot, enjoying the mountain air and views of the gorge. The Hirano Sato rest house serves as a convenient stop for sightseeing visitors, offering a place to rest and enjoy light refreshments when available.

Because this is a mountainous area, trail conditions and available facilities may vary by season. Check local information before setting out, especially if you plan to walk beyond the main viewing areas.

Access and Important Travel Advice

By car: The drive from central Tokushima takes approximately three hours via National Routes 55 and 195. After turning off National Route 195 toward the gorge, visitors should drive carefully because falling rocks may occur along the mountain road. Check road conditions before departure and allow plenty of time for the journey.

By public transportation: From the bus stop in front of JR Anan Station, take the Tokushima Bus Nyūya Line to Kawaguchi Bus Office. Transfer there to a Tokushima Bus Nanbu service bound for Hiwada, then get off at Konose Gorge Entrance or Hirano Sato.

Services to Hirano Sato are limited, with some buses operating via the rest house only during the autumn foliage season, approximately October 20 to November 20. Some services operate on a demand-responsive basis and require advance reservations with Tokushima Bus Nanbu. Confirm the latest timetable, route, and reservation requirements before traveling.

Plan Ahead During the Autumn Season

Konose Gorge is a rewarding destination for travelers who appreciate dramatic mountain landscapes and seasonal scenery. However, its remote location and narrow mountain roads require careful planning. Falling rocks may pose a hazard, and traffic can increase during the peak foliage period. Allow extra travel time, check local road and bus information, and avoid rushing along the mountain routes.

With its imposing V-shaped valley, towering limestone formations, and brilliant autumn colors, Konose Gorge offers an unforgettable glimpse of Tokushima’s rugged natural beauty. For visitors willing to venture into the mountains, it is a scenic highlight of the Naka River headwaters and one of the region’s most memorable places to experience Japan’s autumn foliage.
