A Peaceful Green Retreat Where Culture and Nature Come Together

Tokushima Bunka-no-Mori General Park is a large cultural park located on Mukōterayama in Hachiman-cho, Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture. Established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Tokushima Prefecture, the park covers approximately 40.6 hectares and brings together cultural institutions within a natural setting.

The park has been selected as one of the 88 Scenic Views of Tokushima and designated as part of the Awa Historical and Cultural Route. In 2016, the combined number of visitors to its facilities surpassed 20 million, demonstrating its enduring popularity among local residents and tourists alike.

Museums, art galleries, libraries, and other cultural facilities are integrated into the surrounding greenery, creating a destination where visitors can explore Tokushima’s history and artistic heritage while enjoying a relaxing outdoor environment.

Park Overview: Culture Surrounded by Nature

Located approximately 5 kilometers south of central Tokushima, the park occupies a hillside overlooking the Enose River. Covering around 40 hectares, it brings together six prefectural cultural institutions alongside landscaped gardens, wooded areas, and open spaces.

The park is organized into themed areas, including the Forest of Knowledge, the Forest of Creativity, and the Prefectural Citizens’ Forest. Each combines cultural activities with the natural environment, offering opportunities for learning, recreation, and relaxation.

Conceived as a center for cultural creation and a symbol of the prefecture’s cultural life, the park officially opened on November 3, 1990. Since then, it has become a popular place for residents to enjoy nature, attend cultural events, and explore the arts and sciences.

Six Major Cultural Institutions

Tokushima Bunka-no-Mori General Park is home to six main prefectural facilities. Each is identified by a distinctive color, making it easier for visitors to recognize the different institutions throughout the complex.

Tokushima Prefectural Library — Orange: A resource for reading, research, and lifelong learning.

Tokushima Prefectural Museum — Light Blue: A place to discover the prefecture’s natural environment, history, and cultural heritage.

Tokushima Prefectural Torii Ryūzō Memorial Museum — Yellow: Dedicated to the achievements of Torii Ryūzō, an influential anthropologist from Tokushima.

Tokushima Prefectural Museum of Modern Art — Purple: Showcases modern and contemporary artistic expression.

Tokushima Prefectural 21st Century Hall — Green: A venue for cultural exchange, events, and community activities.

Tokushima Prefectural Archives — Brown: Preserves historical documents and provides resources for studying the region’s past.

With these institutions gathered in one location, visitors can easily combine several cultural experiences during a single trip.

Highlights of the Park

The Symbol Plaza and Cascade Waterfall

At the heart of the park lies the Symbol Plaza, from which the main cultural facilities spread out in a fan-shaped arrangement. One of its most striking features is the Cascade, a stepped artificial waterfall extending approximately 135 meters.

Water flows down the hillside toward the cluster of cultural buildings, creating a distinctive landscape that blends architecture with nature. The cascade is one of the park’s most recognizable features and an attractive place to pause while exploring the grounds.

The Forest of Knowledge and the Forest of Creativity

Themed green spaces surrounding the library, museums, art gallery, and archives connect the park’s cultural institutions with their natural surroundings. These areas offer pleasant places to walk, relax, and enjoy the changing scenery between visits to the facilities.

Spring is especially beautiful, when cherry blossoms brighten the park. The trees around the Cascade and the lawn near the Forest of Knowledge typically reach full bloom from late March to early April, creating a lovely setting for a seasonal stroll.

The Prefectural Citizens’ Forest and Summer Hydrangeas

The Prefectural Citizens’ Forest features trees and flowers representing municipalities throughout Tokushima Prefecture. It offers visitors a chance to appreciate the region’s diverse local flora in a peaceful woodland setting.

During summer, hydrangeas come into bloom, adding vivid colors to the greenery. Their seasonal display provides another reason to visit the park at a different time of year.

Outdoor Theater and Traditional Culture

An Outdoor Theater for Events and Performances

The park includes an outdoor theater with seating for approximately 2,000 people. It hosts a variety of events and performances, providing a venue for cultural activities in an open-air setting.

The Forest of Tradition

Alongside the Forest of Knowledge and the Forest of Creativity, the park’s Forest of Tradition offers opportunities to connect with the area’s cultural heritage. Together, these themed zones encourage visitors to explore local traditions while enjoying the surrounding natural landscape.

Oji Shrine and Mukōterayama

Another notable attraction within the park is Oji Shrine, affectionately known as “Neko-gami-san,” or the Cat Shrine. The shrine has long been revered by local residents as a guardian of the community and is associated with distinctive local legends and prayers for good fortune.

The park also extends across Mukōterayama, where protected woodland preserves the area’s natural environment. The combination of forested hills, cultural institutions, and a historic shrine gives the park a character that goes beyond a conventional urban green space.
