Awa Odori Kaikan

Experience Tokushima’s famous traditional dance all year round

Awa Odori Kaikan is a cultural center in Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, dedicated to Awa Odori, one of Japan’s best-known traditional dance festivals. Although the main Awa Odori festival takes place over four days during the Obon period in August, this facility allows visitors to experience the excitement, music, and distinctive dance styles of Awa Odori throughout the year.

The building is easy to recognize thanks to its unusual inverted trapezoidal shape, inspired by the tall paper lanterns known as taka-jōchin that symbolize Awa Odori. Opened in July 1999, the center has become an important place for both residents and tourists to discover Tokushima’s cultural identity.

Explore the Five-Story Cultural Center

Awa Odori Kaikan has five floors, each offering a different experience. The combination of live performances, cultural exhibits, local products, and access to Mount Bizan makes it an excellent stop during a visit to central Tokushima.

First floor: Entrance and local products

The entrance hall welcomes visitors to the building. Here you will find Arudeyo Tokushima, the Tokushima Prefectural Products and Tourism Exchange Plaza, where you can browse regional specialties and souvenirs. An information counter and parking facilities are also provided.

Second floor: Awa Odori Hall

The Awa Odori Hall is the center’s main performance venue, with a total seating capacity of 250. Visitors can watch dancers perform the traditional choreography accompanied by the lively rhythms of drums, shamisen, flutes, and other instruments. A gallery space is also located on this floor.

Third floor: Awa Odori Museum

The Awa Odori Museum introduces the history and traditions of the dance. It provides useful background for visitors who want to understand how this celebrated festival developed and why it remains such an important part of Tokushima’s cultural life.

Fourth floor: Activity rooms

The fourth floor contains rooms available for activities and other organized uses, supporting the center’s role as a place for cultural exchange and community events.

Fifth floor: Mount Bizan Ropeway station

The fifth floor houses the lower station of the Mount Bizan Ropeway, which carries visitors up the hillside to enjoy views over Tokushima City and the surrounding landscape. This makes Awa Odori Kaikan a convenient starting point for combining a cultural experience with a scenic excursion.

The fifth floor also features the Moraes Gallery, known as “Saudade,” dedicated to introducing the life and legacy of Wenceslau de Moraes, a Portuguese writer and diplomat who developed a strong connection with Japan.

Watch Awa Odori Performances Throughout the Year

One of the center’s main attractions is its year-round program of live Awa Odori performances. You do not need to visit Tokushima during the August festival to experience the energy of this traditional dance.

Daytime Performances

During the day, the center’s resident Awa Odori troupe gives four performances daily, each lasting approximately 40 minutes. These shows offer an accessible introduction to the dance, its distinctive movements, and its accompanying music.

Evening Performances

In the evening, renowned dance groups belonging to the Awa Odori Promotion Association and the Tokushima branch of the Tokushima Prefecture Awa Odori Association take turns appearing at the venue. The schedule described in information current as of January 2024 featured one performance per day, lasting approximately 50 minutes, with 33 well-known troupes participating in rotation.

Because performance schedules and participating groups may change, check the latest program before your visit. Watching a live show is one of the best ways to appreciate the spirited atmosphere that makes Awa Odori so distinctive.
