Discover the Garden’s Three Main Zones
The Tokushima City General Zoological and Botanical Park covers approximately 58.9 hectares. Tokushima Botanical Garden occupies the area outside the zoo and amusement park sections and is organized into three principal zones: the Urban Greening Botanical Garden, the Entrance Zone, and the Nature Experience Area.
Throughout the grounds, visitors will find a symbolic flower bed, herb garden, conifer garden, and interactive flower beds. These spaces combine attractive landscaping with opportunities to learn about plants and gardening.
The garden also has a Green Consultation Center, where visitors can find specialist books about plants and seek advice on plant care and cultivation. Gardening and horticulture classes are held throughout the year, making the garden a place not only to appreciate nature but also to develop practical gardening skills.
The Urban Greening Botanical Garden
This area was created to raise awareness of urban greening and encourage people to learn about planting and landscape design. It features a variety of plants suited to the local climate and growing conditions of Tokushima, allowing visitors to enjoy changing colors and textures throughout the seasons.
By bringing people closer to flowers, trees, and other greenery, the garden demonstrates how plants can improve urban environments while helping visitors understand the importance of protecting nature. It is an inviting place to take a leisurely walk, discover unfamiliar species, and gather ideas for gardens and green spaces at home.
Explore the Main Areas
Entrance Zone
The Entrance Zone welcomes visitors with spacious open areas, including Condor Plateau, Acorn Square, and a large lawn. Its relaxed atmosphere and open layout make it particularly appealing to families with children and anyone looking for somewhere to unwind outdoors.
The first and second parking lots are located beside this zone, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the garden.
Woodland Experience Zone
Known as the Citizens’ Forest, this area invites visitors to explore a more wooded landscape. Highlights include a hydrangea trail, an adventure plaza, and a scenic gazebo where walkers can pause and enjoy the surroundings.
Terraced fields and walking paths that climb toward the summit provide opportunities for a more active outing. The uphill trails offer a taste of a mountain walk while allowing visitors to enjoy the changing scenery and fresh air.
Satoyama Forest Area
The Satoyama Forest recreates the atmosphere of Japan’s traditional countryside, where woodland, village landscapes, and human activity have long existed in close relationship. Observation trails and a bamboo-gathering path encourage visitors to explore the environment at a relaxed pace.
The Eastern Ridge Trail and Woodland Trail are especially suited to those seeking a quiet walk beneath the trees. These shaded paths provide a peaceful setting for enjoying the forest and taking a break from the pace of everyday life.
Waterside Area
The Waterside Area features a reservoir and paths that follow the water’s edge. It offers a different perspective on the garden, with opportunities to appreciate the plants and wildlife associated with wet environments.
In spring and summer, a variety of aquatic plants can be observed around the water. A waterside resting area provides a pleasant place to sit, listen to natural sounds, and enjoy the tranquil scenery.
Trees and Flowers to Look Out For
Tokushima Botanical Garden contains a wide range of trees and shrubs suited to the region’s climate. Depending on the season, visitors may encounter flowering trees, colorful shrubs, fragrant blossoms, and plants that bring interest to the garden throughout the year.
Representative species include American coral tree, Japanese snowbell, Japanese viburnum, large-flowered azalea, Kurume azalea, Reeves spiraea, kobushi magnolia, and Japanese yellow rose. Other flowering trees and shrubs include Cornus florida, Japanese stewartia, Japanese witch hazel, Japanese snow flower, lilac, and forsythia.
Visitors can also look for hydrangeas, abelia, Japanese pagoda tree, St. John’s wort, gardenia, satsuki azalea, crape myrtle, magnolia, silk tree, rose of Sharon, and fragrant olive. Camellias and winter-flowering cherry trees provide seasonal interest beyond the main flowering periods.
The variety of species means that the garden’s appearance changes throughout the year. Spring brings fresh foliage and flowering trees, while summer offers lush greenery and hydrangeas. Other plants add color and fragrance at different times, making repeat visits rewarding for garden lovers.
A Place for Gardening and Environmental Learning
Tokushima Botanical Garden is more than a landscaped park. Through its Green Consultation Center and year-round gardening and horticulture classes, it helps residents and visitors learn about plants, cultivation techniques, and the role of greenery in daily life.
Whether you are an experienced gardener or simply curious about the plants around you, the garden provides an accessible introduction to horticulture. Its combination of display gardens, woodland paths, and educational facilities makes it an enjoyable destination for visitors of different ages and interests.
