Omiko Beach

A Scenic Coastline Framed by Pine Forests and the Sea

Omiko Beach is a picturesque coastal destination at the northern end of Hiwasa-Omiko Regional Park in Tokushima Prefecture. To the southwest rises Mount Hinomine, one of the three mountains traditionally known as the Awa Sanmine. Behind the beach, a pine forest creates a beautiful natural backdrop, making this stretch of coastline a well-known spot for enjoying Tokushima’s scenery.

The area also has a fascinating history. During the Edo period (1603–1868), a checkpoint and signal-fire station were established along the coast to watch for unauthorized arrivals and shipwrecks. Today, visitors come to appreciate the landscape, explore the surrounding park, and enjoy outdoor activities rather than swimming.

Why Swimming Is Prohibited

Omiko Beach once operated as a swimming beach, but swimming is now prohibited because of dangerous underwater conditions. The seabed includes a geological feature known as a drowned valley, formed when a valley on land was submerged by rising sea levels or land subsidence. The resulting underwater terrain creates complex currents that have contributed to repeated drowning accidents in the past.

For safety reasons, swimming is not permitted. Nevertheless, the coastline remains an attractive destination for sightseeing, walking, and enjoying the natural surroundings. Visitors should observe local restrictions and stay clear of hazardous areas along the water’s edge.

Discover Hiwasa-Omiko Regional Park

Hiwasa-Omiko Regional Park extends from Omiko Beach in Tokushima City to the foothills of Mount Hinomine in neighboring Komatsushima City. Facing the Kii Channel, the park features an appealing combination of coastline, wooded hills, viewpoints, and outdoor recreation areas.

With a developed area of approximately 65 hectares, it is one of the largest urban parks in Tokushima Prefecture. Viewpoints and walking trails allow visitors to enjoy the natural landscape at a leisurely pace, making the park a pleasant destination for families, hikers, and anyone seeking a break from the city.

Mount Hinomine: One of the Awa Sanmine

Mount Hinomine stands at the heart of the park and is one of the three mountains known as the Awa Sanmine. Although it is not particularly high, it is a popular hiking destination because of its impressive views over the Kii Channel and the surrounding towns.

From the summit, visitors can look out across Tokushima City and Komatsushima City. On clear days, the blue sea and green hills create a striking panorama. Hiking around Mount Hinomine is a rewarding way to experience the area’s natural beauty beyond the beach itself.

The History of the Regional Park

The park took its present form in 1975, when Omiko Park in Tokushima City and Hinomine Park in Komatsushima City were brought together through urban planning to create Hiwasa-Omiko Regional Park.

Recreational facilities were added over the following decades. Tennis courts and a campground were completed in 1992, followed by a children’s play area in 1997. These developments helped establish the park as a popular destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Additional improvements expanded the areas available to visitors. The East Observation Plaza was completed in 2001, and Yasamichi Plaza was developed in 2002, adding more places to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Observation Points and Walking Trails

The park has several viewpoints from which to appreciate the coastal landscape. The South Observation Point is particularly notable for its wide views over both Tokushima City and Komatsushima City.

Walking trails wind through the natural surroundings, offering opportunities to enjoy the pine forest, coastal scenery, and fresh air. Whether you prefer a gentle stroll or a more active hike, the park provides a peaceful setting for spending time outdoors.

Attractions Around Omiko Beach

Several recreational facilities are located in and around the park. The Omiko Tennis Center attracts tennis players, while Tokushima Youth Hostel offers accommodation for visitors wishing to stay close to nature.

South of Mount Hinomine lies Komiko Beach, another scenic stretch of coast. However, there is no direct road connecting it to Omiko Beach, so visitors should plan their route separately rather than expecting to walk or drive straight between the two beaches.

Omiko Tennis Center

Located within the park, Omiko Tennis Center has clay courts surrounded by greenery. The natural setting makes it an appealing place to play tennis while enjoying the outdoors. The park’s other recreational facilities also make the wider area suitable for outings with family and friends.

Tokushima Youth Hostel

Tokushima Youth Hostel provides accommodation in a natural setting near Omiko Beach. Its location makes it a convenient option for travelers who want to explore the coastline and surrounding park without staying in the city center.

The youth-hostel style of accommodation may appeal to budget-conscious travelers and backpackers. Visitors should check current availability, facilities, and rates before making plans.

Komiko Beach

Komiko Beach lies south of Omiko Beach, on the opposite side of Mount Hinomine. Its attractive coastal scenery makes it an interesting destination for those who want to discover more of the region’s shoreline. Since there is no direct connecting road between the two beaches, access requires a separate route.

Omiko Beach and Hiwasa-Omiko Regional Park can be reached by public transportation or car. From JR Tokushima Station, Tokushima Bus services bound for Omiko provide access to several stops in the park area, including Omiko Beach Entrance, Children’s Plaza, and Omiko Tennis Center. Choose the stop best suited to your destination.

Enjoy the Natural Beauty of Omiko Beach

Omiko Beach and Hiwasa-Omiko Regional Park offer much more than a coastal view. Their combination of pine forests, historical features, scenic viewpoints, hiking trails, and recreational facilities makes the area a rewarding destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Although swimming is prohibited because of dangerous underwater currents, visitors can still enjoy the beach’s distinctive landscape and explore the surrounding park. Take a walk through the greenery, hike Mount Hinomine for panoramic views, or spend time at one of the park’s recreational facilities to experience a quieter side of Tokushima.
