History of Kawashima Shrine
The exact date of the shrine’s founding is unknown, but it was relocated to its present site in 1916. The move followed river improvement works on the Yoshino River in 1915. During this project, 43 shrines, including Ukishima Hachimangu Shrine on Zenjoin Island, were consolidated, and Kawashima Shrine was established at its current location.
The shrine grounds occupy the former second bailey of Kawashima Castle, one of the historic fortifications of the Awa region. This setting makes a visit especially appealing to travelers interested in the history of medieval Japan and the development of local communities along the Yoshino River.
Deities enshrined at Kawashima Shrine
Kawashima Shrine enshrines three deities, each associated with different aspects of Japanese religious tradition.
Emperor Ōjin (Honda-wake no Sumeramikoto): Revered as Hachiman, a deity widely worshipped as a protector of warriors and communities. He is traditionally described as a son of Emperor Chūai and Empress Jingū.
Ame no Hiwashi no Mikoto: An ancient deity associated with the traditions of the Awa region and its early religious heritage.
Sugawara no Michizane: A historical scholar and court official revered as the deity of learning. Students and those seeking success in their studies commonly worship him at shrines dedicated to his spirit.
Explore Kawashima Park
Kawashima Shrine stands within Kawashima Park, a public park developed on the former site of Kawashima Castle. The park was completed in April 1981 and combines historical remains, walking areas, recreational facilities, and scenic viewpoints.
The site was once occupied by Kawashima Castle, counted among the Awa Nine Castles, a group of fortifications associated with the region’s history. Today, the park offers a pleasant setting for exploring the past while enjoying the surrounding landscape.
Seasonal scenery and panoramic views
Kawashima Park is attractive throughout the year. In spring, cherry blossoms brighten the grounds, while early summer brings the vivid flowers of Kirishima azaleas. These seasonal displays make the park a relaxing place for a stroll and photography.
One of its highlights is Iwa-no-Hana Observatory, located at the western end of the park and reached by climbing a flight of stone steps. From the viewpoint, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Yoshino River and Zenjoin Island, a large island within the river. The observatory has been selected as one of the 88 Views of Shikoku, earning recognition for its outstanding scenery.
