A Peaceful Forest Retreat for Discovering Wildlife and Nature

Tokushima Prefectural Sanagōchi Village Ikimono Fureai no Sato is a nature park in Sanagōchi Village, Myōdō District, Tokushima Prefecture. Opened on July 21, 1992, the facility was established to deepen public understanding of nature conservation through opportunities to encounter and learn about wild plants and animals.

Surrounded by rich natural landscapes, the park offers opportunities for nature observation, wildlife watching, forest walks, and camping. It is an appealing destination for families, nature lovers, and travelers seeking a relaxing outdoor experience away from the bustle of the city.

Nature Center and Learning Facilities

The Nature Center serves as the main hub for activities and environmental education. It features exhibition rooms, a lecture room with seating for approximately 40 people, and a library area where visitors can browse wildlife guides and reference materials. The center supports a variety of learning programs and group activities, helping visitors gain a deeper understanding of the local environment.

Staff members are available to answer questions and provide guidance about the surrounding wildlife and natural habitats. The center is a useful starting point for exploring the park’s trails and observation areas.

Nature Trails and Wildlife Observation Areas

The park has several designated observation areas, each focusing on a different aspect of the natural environment. Trails connect visitors with forests, bird habitats, plant communities, and streams, making it possible to explore the area’s biodiversity at a leisurely pace.

Insect Observation Forest

This woodland area is ideal for observing insects and learning about their seasonal behavior. A trail of approximately 940 meters winds through the forest, offering opportunities to discover the small creatures that inhabit the trees and undergrowth. It is particularly enjoyable for children and anyone interested in the world of insects.

Wild Bird Observation Forest

The Wild Bird Observation Forest provides a tranquil setting for birdwatching. Visitors can watch birds from an observation shelter along a trail approximately 1,490 meters long. The quiet woodland environment makes it a rewarding place to slow down and appreciate the sounds and movements of wild birds.

Plant Observation Forest

A trail of approximately 930 meters leads through an area where visitors can discover a variety of plant species, including seasonal flowers and less commonly encountered plants. It is a pleasant place to learn about the diversity of forest vegetation and notice how the landscape changes throughout the year.

Forest Observation Hill

This area offers opportunities to explore the forest while learning about woodland ecosystems. Its approximately 1,500-meter trail allows visitors to enjoy a longer walk through nature and observe the relationships between trees, plants, and the wider forest environment.

Wild Bird Observation Hill

Located at a higher elevation, this observation area features two birdwatching shelters with a combined floor area of approximately 20 square meters, as well as an observation platform. It is especially popular during migration seasons, when a variety of birds may pass through the area.

Aquatic Wildlife Observation Valley

This valley follows streams and wetlands where visitors can observe aquatic animals in their natural habitats. The approximately 600-meter trail offers a closer look at the small creatures that live in and around the water, providing a different perspective on the area’s biodiversity.

Camping in the Forest

The park also has a campground at an elevation of approximately 650 meters, surrounded by a peaceful Japanese red pine forest. The cooler mountain setting and natural surroundings make it a relaxing place to spend time outdoors, enjoy the forest atmosphere, and experience a night away from everyday routines.

Bungalows and Tent Sites

The campground has five bungalows and 20 designated tent sites. A shared cooking shelter is provided in the central area of the tent-site grounds, making the facilities suitable for families and groups who want to prepare meals while camping.
