Aigahama Beach

A Scenic Shoreline Overlooking the Naruto Strait

Aigahama Beach is a beautiful coastal spot on Oge Island in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea. Located close to the Naruto Strait, it offers visitors an opportunity to appreciate the dramatic power of the fast-moving tidal currents and the magnificent natural scenery of the area. The beach is also a convenient stop when exploring the many attractions around Naruto Park.

Location and Natural Scenery

Aigahama Beach lies within Naruto Park, close to the impressive Onaruto Bridge and the Senjojiki Observation Point. From the shoreline, visitors can enjoy views of the bridge and the Naruto Strait, famous for its powerful currents and spectacular whirlpools. The combination of the rugged coastline, shifting tides, and immense bridge structure makes this an appealing location for photography and scenic walks.

Approximately 100 meters offshore is Hadakajima, a small uninhabited island. Its distinctive rocky appearance adds character to the seascape and provides a striking contrast with the Onaruto Bridge above the water.

Highlights of Aigahama Beach

One of the main attractions is the opportunity to observe the powerful currents of the Naruto Strait from close to sea level. Depending on the tidal conditions, visitors may also be able to see the famous whirlpools that form in this narrow passage between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

The beach offers excellent views of Hadakajima and the surrounding coastline, with the Onaruto Bridge creating an impressive backdrop. The scenery can be particularly atmospheric around sunset, when changing light transforms the sea and surrounding landscape.

Hadakajima Island

Hadakajima is a small, uninhabited island in Naruto, located approximately 100 meters from Aigahama Beach. It lies within Setonaikai National Park, an area celebrated for its coastal scenery and islands. The island’s exposed rocky surfaces give it a rugged, distinctive appearance, and it can be viewed from the beach without leaving the shore.

Historical records indicate that the island’s unusual form attracted attention centuries ago. The *Itano County Gazetteer* recorded its dimensions, while the 1795 work *Naruto Henshu* described its rocky surface as resembling layers of tatami mats, with pine trees growing on it.

How the Onaruto Bridge Changed the Landscape

The construction of the Onaruto Bridge significantly altered the island’s original setting. The bridge’s Shikoku-side main tower was built near the central waterway around the island, and the bridge now passes directly above it. Although the landscape has changed, the contrast between the rugged island and the monumental bridge has created a distinctive sight of its own.

Nearby Attraction: Onaruto Bridge

The Onaruto Bridge connects Shikoku with Awaji Island and is one of the region’s most recognizable landmarks. Its enormous scale is impressive when viewed from Aigahama Beach, while the bridge itself provides opportunities to look down over the Naruto Strait from above. The appearance of the whirlpools varies with the tides, so checking the tide schedule before visiting can help you plan your sightseeing.

Access

From JR Naruto Station, Aigahama Beach is approximately a 20-minute drive. By car, it is about 10 minutes from Naruto-kita Interchange on the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway. Its location within Naruto Park makes it easy to combine a visit with nearby viewpoints and other attractions around the Onaruto Bridge.

Enjoy the Coastline of Naruto

Aigahama Beach and Hadakajima offer a memorable combination of natural beauty, historic coastal scenery, and impressive modern engineering. Whether you want to observe the powerful currents of the Naruto Strait, photograph the Onaruto Bridge, or enjoy the rugged shoreline, this scenic spot is a worthwhile stop on a trip to Naruto. Take time to appreciate the changing sea and the striking contrast between the small island and the vast bridge overhead.
