Ryuzu Falls

Peaceful waterfalls surrounded by the natural beauty of Tokushima

Ryuzu Falls is a scenic waterfall in Kamononomiya, Mino-cho, Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture. It flows along the Takitani River, a tributary of the Nakatoro River, which belongs to Japan’s Class A river system. Recognized as one of the attractions featured in the “88 Views of Tokushima” and the “50 Selections of Tokushima’s Water Journeys,” the waterfall is a rewarding destination for travelers seeking tranquil natural scenery.

Discover Two Beautiful Waterfalls

Surrounded by lush greenery, Ryuzu Falls offers a peaceful retreat where the sound of flowing water blends with the quiet of the forest. The waterfall is also known as the First Waterfall, or *Ichi-no-taki*. Continue farther upstream to discover Kongo Falls, the Second Waterfall, or *Ni-no-taki*, which plunges approximately 40 meters down the rock face.

Both waterfalls are especially beautiful in autumn, when red and golden foliage transforms the surrounding landscape. The vivid colors reflected in the flowing water create a spectacular seasonal scene, giving the area its reputation as a wonderful place to enjoy autumn leaves.

Legends of Kobo Daishi

These waterfalls are associated with Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the influential Buddhist monk who founded the Shingon school of Buddhism. According to local tradition, he practiced ascetic training at Ryuzu Falls during the Tencho era (824–834). Kongo Falls is also connected with legends of his religious training, adding a spiritual dimension to the natural landscape.

Visitors can experience more than the beauty of the waterfalls here. The stories passed down through generations evoke the area’s long history of Buddhist faith and mountain asceticism.

The Connection with Takidera Temple

Ryuzu Falls and Kongo Falls are located near Takidera Temple, a Buddhist temple belonging to the Omuro branch of Shingon Buddhism. The temple’s tranquil atmosphere and historical associations complement the surrounding natural scenery, making the area an appealing destination for visitors interested in both nature and religious heritage.

Visiting Ryuzu Falls and Kongo Falls

The waterfalls can be reached by car or on foot. From Eguchi Station on the JR Tokushima Line, the drive takes approximately 10 minutes, while walking takes about one hour. By car, the journey from the Mima Interchange on the Tokushima Expressway also takes around 10 minutes.

For a memorable visit, allow time to explore both waterfalls and enjoy the surrounding forest. Autumn is particularly attractive, when the foliage enhances the dramatic scenery and the waterfalls reveal a different character amid the seasonal colors.

A Peaceful Nature Escape in Miyoshi

Ryuzu Falls and Kongo Falls combine beautiful natural scenery with legends rooted in Japan’s Buddhist traditions. From the gentle atmosphere of Ryuzu Falls to the impressive 40-meter drop of Kongo Falls, the pair offers a rewarding excursion for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers exploring the mountains of Tokushima. Their proximity to Takidera Temple makes them an especially interesting stop for those wishing to experience the region’s natural beauty alongside its spiritual history.
