Biwa Waterfall

A Scenic Cascade Steeped in Heike Legend

Biwa Waterfall is a picturesque waterfall in Kansho, Nishi-Iya-Yama Village, Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture. Set in a small valley along a tributary of the Iya River, the waterfall is surrounded by the deep green mountains of the Iya region. Its cascading water and soothing natural sounds create a refreshing retreat for visitors exploring this remote part of Shikoku.

The waterfall is commonly described as approximately 25 meters high and is included in Tokushima Prefecture’s “50 Selected Water Journeys” (Tokushima Mizu Kiko 50-sen), a collection recognizing notable waterside landscapes across the prefecture. Its natural beauty and connection to local history make it a popular stop near one of the region’s best-known attractions, the Iya Kazurabashi Vine Bridge.

The Legend Behind the Name

The name “Biwa Waterfall” is associated with a poignant legend about the Heike, or Taira clan, who were defeated during the Genpei War in the late twelfth century. After losing the Battle of Yashima, some members of the defeated clan are said to have fled into the remote Iya Valley, where they hid and eventually settled.

According to local tradition, these refugees remembered the refined life they had once enjoyed in the capital, Kyoto. Beside the waterfall, they are said to have played the biwa, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument, finding comfort in its music and in one another’s company.

The story gives the waterfall a distinctive atmosphere. As visitors listen to the rushing water in the quiet mountain valley, it is easy to imagine the exiled nobles seeking solace in music while remembering their lost homeland. The legend remains an evocative part of the cultural heritage of the Iya region.

The Waterfall and Its Natural Beauty

Biwa Waterfall is admired for the force of its falling water and the contrast between the white cascade and the surrounding greenery. Some descriptions give its height as approximately 40 meters, although the commonly cited figure is around 25 meters. The appearance of the waterfall changes with rainfall, sunlight, and the season, giving the landscape a different character throughout the year.

When sunlight and water droplets meet under favorable conditions, a rainbow may appear in the spray, creating a particularly beautiful scene. The combination of the waterfall, forested slopes, and the sound of flowing water makes this a rewarding place to pause during a journey through the mountain scenery of Iya.

Walking Trails and Riverside Activities

A short distance beyond the waterfall, approximately 100 meters away, a walking path leads toward the river. Stone steps provide access to the waterside, where visitors can enjoy the clear mountain stream and spend time surrounded by nature.

The riverside is especially appealing during summer, when the cool water offers a refreshing contrast to the heat. Conditions can vary, however, and visitors should take care around slippery rocks, strong currents, and changing water levels. Enjoy the scenery responsibly and avoid entering the water when conditions are unsafe.

Near the Famous Iya Kazurabashi Vine Bridge

One of the greatest advantages of visiting Biwa Waterfall is its proximity to the Iya Kazurabashi Vine Bridge, a celebrated landmark in Tokushima Prefecture. Traditionally constructed using plant vines, the suspension bridge stretches across the river and offers an adventurous crossing amid the surrounding mountains.

Combining the waterfall with the vine bridge makes an excellent way to explore the natural and cultural attractions of the Iya Valley. The bridge provides a memorable encounter with traditional mountain engineering, while the waterfall offers a quieter setting in which to appreciate the region’s scenery and folklore.

How to Get to Biwa Waterfall

Biwa Waterfall is approximately 15 minutes by car from JR Oboke Station on the Dosan Line. Because public transportation in the mountainous Iya area is limited, traveling by rental car or taxi is often the most convenient option.

Parking is available in the surrounding area, making the waterfall a practical stop on a sightseeing trip through western Tokushima. Visitors can combine their visit with the Iya Kazurabashi Vine Bridge and other scenic locations in the Iya Valley for a fuller day exploring the region.

Discover the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Iya

Biwa Waterfall brings together the dramatic beauty of a mountain cascade and a moving legend from Japan’s medieval past. Its rushing water, forested surroundings, and association with the Heike refugees give it a character that goes beyond its scenic appeal.

Whether you visit to enjoy the cool mountain air, explore the nearby riverside, or learn about the stories passed down through generations, Biwa Waterfall is a worthwhile stop in the Iya Valley. Pair it with a visit to the Iya Kazurabashi Vine Bridge to experience two of the area’s most memorable attractions in one trip.
