Oboke Gorge

Dramatic Cliffs and Spectacular River Scenery

Oboke Gorge, located along the middle reaches of the Yoshino River in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, is one of Shikoku’s most remarkable natural attractions. Together with the neighboring Koboke Gorge, it forms the celebrated Oboke and Koboke gorge area, known for its towering rock faces, deep valleys, and powerful river currents. The area is designated both a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a National Natural Monument, reflecting its exceptional geological and scenic value.

Visitors can admire the gorge from scenic viewpoints, take a sightseeing boat along the river, or experience the rapids through activities such as rafting and canoeing. The surrounding mountains, unusual rock formations, and local folklore make Oboke an appealing destination for travelers interested in both nature and regional culture.

The Geology and Landscape of Oboke Gorge

A Dramatic V-Shaped Valley

Oboke and Koboke form a deeply incised V-shaped valley carved by the Yoshino River. The steep cliffs expose rocks belonging to the Sambagawa Metamorphic Belt, a geological zone known for its metamorphic rocks. In Tokushima, these distinctive stones are often called Awa no Aosh i, or Awa Blue Stone, and their colors and textures contribute to the gorge’s striking appearance.

The exposed rocks also reveal complex geological structures created by folding and metamorphism over millions of years. Differences in the degree of metamorphism can be observed across the folded rock formations, making the area valuable for geological study as well as scenic sightseeing.

National Natural Monument and Place of Scenic Beauty

Oboke has long been recognized for its natural and scientific importance. It was designated a National Natural Monument in 2014 and a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 2015. In 2018, the scenic designation was revised to cover the combined area of Oboke and Koboke.

The designated section of Oboke extends for approximately 1,100 meters and covers an area of 89,526 square meters. These protections recognize not only the gorge’s spectacular scenery but also its unusual geological formations and academic value.

The Meaning and History of the Name Oboke

A popular explanation suggests that the name Oboke means “dangerous to walk with long strides,” reflecting the steep cliffs and treacherous terrain. However, the name is generally thought to derive from the old Japanese word hoki, referring to a precipitous mountainside or cliff beside a stream.

Historical documents preserve several variations of the place name. The area appears as “Ōbōke” in older written records, including the Awa-shi, a history of Awa Province published in 1815. During the land-tax reform of 1873, the characters “大歩怪” were also used. These different forms offer a glimpse into the long history of the name and the way the landscape has been understood over time.

Enjoying Oboke Gorge

Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat

One of the best ways to appreciate the gorge is from the Oboke Gorge sightseeing boat. The boat travels along the Yoshino River, allowing passengers to look up at the towering rock walls and observe the unusual formations from the water. The scenery changes with the seasons, and autumn is particularly beautiful when the surrounding mountains are covered in colorful foliage.

The area began developing as a tourist destination around 1891, when a local resident, Isokichi Ohira, started offering sightseeing trips in a traditional kandori-bune boat. This early venture laid the foundation for the river cruises that remain one of Oboke’s signature attractions today.

Rafting and Canoeing on the Yoshino River

The Yoshino River is famous for its powerful currents and exciting rapids, making the Oboke area a major destination for white-water rafting. Canoeing and other river activities are also popular, giving visitors different ways to experience the energy of the water and the dramatic scenery surrounding it.

For travelers seeking adventure, the river provides an exhilarating contrast to the peaceful views from the sightseeing boat. Conditions can vary with the weather and water levels, so visitors should choose activities appropriate to their experience and follow local operators’ safety guidance.

Lapis Oboke: Rocks, Minerals, and Yokai Legends

Approximately one kilometer downstream from Oboke Station is Lapis Oboke, a museum featuring rocks and minerals from the region. Its exhibits help visitors understand the geological characteristics that have shaped the gorge and its distinctive stone formations.

The museum also explores local supernatural folklore, including stories about more than 150 yokai, the mysterious creatures of Japanese tradition. One of the best-known figures is Konaki Jijii, a yokai associated with the Oboke area. The combination of geology and folklore makes Lapis Oboke an interesting stop for families and travelers curious about the cultural stories connected with the landscape.

The Yokai Village and Local Revitalization

The area around Oboke is promoted as a Yokai Village, drawing on the local tradition that Konaki Jijii originated here. Statues and folklore-related attractions celebrate these stories and give the region a distinctive identity beyond its natural scenery.

These community-led initiatives have also helped promote tourism and regional revitalization. The project received the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s Handmade Hometown Award in fiscal year 2020, recognizing efforts to make use of local heritage and create an engaging destination for visitors.

Road Conditions and the Planned Oboke Tunnel

The mountainous terrain around Oboke and Koboke is prone to landslides and rockfalls. During periods of heavy rainfall, these hazards can force temporary closures of National Route 32, an important road connecting communities and tourist destinations in the area.

To improve transport safety and reliability, the Oboke Tunnel has been planned as a measure to reduce the impact of these hazards. The project is intended to make travel safer and more convenient for both local residents and visitors. Travelers driving through the gorge should check current road conditions, especially during periods of heavy rain.
