Momiji Onsen

A Relaxing Hot Spring Surrounded by Nature

Unwind in scenic outdoor baths, enjoy mountain views, and discover a welcoming local retreat in Miyoshi

Momiji Onsen is a day-use hot spring facility in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, where visitors can relax amid the beauty of the surrounding countryside. Known as Fureai Momiji Onsen, it offers a comfortable place to unwind after exploring the region, with bathing facilities, a restaurant, and nearby outdoor attractions. The changing scenery throughout the year adds to its appeal, making it a pleasant stop for travelers and local residents alike.

History and Hot Spring Water

Momiji Onsen opened in 1994, and its facilities were renovated in July 1999. Today, Fureai Momiji Onsen is managed by the Tokushima Prefecture Workers’ Welfare Network, a public-interest foundation, and continues to serve as a popular local bathing facility.

The water is described as bicarbonate-rich, often associated with a smooth, soft sensation on the skin. It is colorless and odorless. However, the source material notes that it is not classified as a “hot spring” under Article 2 of Japan’s Hot Springs Act, but is instead used as hot spring water at the facility.

Bathing Facilities and Mountain Views

Fureai Momiji Onsen offers a variety of bathing and relaxation options, including an outdoor bath, a sauna equipped with a television, and a cold-water bath. The outdoor bath is a particular highlight, with views toward the Asan Mountains and the surrounding natural landscape. Depending on the season, visitors may enjoy fresh greenery, autumn colors, or the quiet atmosphere of the mountains.

For those who prefer especially hot water, the facility also has a very hot bath known as the “Goku-Atsu Bath.” The reported temperature is 45°C in the men’s bath and 44°C in the women’s bath. These temperatures are high, so visitors should take care and avoid prolonged bathing, particularly if they are sensitive to heat.

Dine at Momiji-tei

The first floor houses Momiji-tei, a restaurant where visitors can enjoy a meal after bathing. Its menu focuses on straightforward, comforting dishes, making it a convenient place to relax without leaving the facility.

The second floor can also be reserved for group gatherings, with banquet and karaoke plans available. These options make the venue suitable for families, friends, and other groups looking for a relaxed place to spend time together.

Special Offers and Discount Services

Regular visitors can make use of the Tokutoku Momiji Onsen Card, a loyalty card that awards one free bath after 24 points have been collected. Customers receive an additional point every Friday, while a special promotion on the 26th of each month—known in Japan as “Bath Day”—awards extra points according to the result of a dice roll.

JAF membership cards and various coupons may also be accepted, and group discounts are available. Check with the facility for the latest terms and eligibility before visiting.
